Formed in the spirit of bike advocacy and a pro-active approach towards greater sustainability, Bike UNL is committed to:

  1. Centralizing information on bicycling at UNL into one, clear source.
  2. Educating UNL cyclists about campus resources, services, policies and cycling safety.
  3. Creating and promoting cycling programs and events.
  4. Advocating for bike-related issues and improvements at UNL.

History

Bike UNL is the direct result of the efforts of the ASUN Bicycle Transportation Ad Hoc Committee (Bike Committee), which was signed into effect via Senate Bill 8 on October 27, 2010. Passed unanimously, the Bike Committee was charged with:

“THEREFORE BE IT ENACTED, that ASUN supports the movement towards a Bike Friendly University; and

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, that ASUN will create a Bicycle Transportation Ad Hoc Committee charged with the evaluation, assessment, and, if applicable, execution of steps toward becoming a Bike Friendly University, and will be comprised of any combination of the following members: a member from ASUN, the Environmental Issues Representative, Campus Recreation, Wellness Initiative, Parking and Transportation Services, UNL Police Department, Institutional Research and Planning, UNL Housing, Landscape Services, the Pedestrian-Bicycle Advisory Committee, the Chancellor’s Commission on Environmental Sustainability, an at large graduate student members, and an at large student member.”

The initial mission of the group was to evaluate, assess, and execute the steps necessary to be recognized as “Bike Friendly University” via the recognition process from the League of American Bicyclists.  However, upon evaluation, the committee decided to incorporate more goals that addressed UNL’s need to develop their “5 Es on bicycling on campus (see future goals).
